Johan Verbeke


Johan Verbeke is professor of Research Design at KU Leuven Faculty of Architecture. He received his PhD in 1991.  He joined the School of Architecture Sint-Lucas in 1992.
In 2003 he finished an MBA with special focus on innovation, creativity and knowledge processes.  Between 2003 and 2009 he was the head of the School of Architecture Sint-Lucas.
Since October 2013 he is also professor of Research by Design in the Aarhus School of Architecture and is in Aarhus director of the PhD programme.

His main interests were CAAD, new technologies used for designing and teaching and management processes in higher education. Recently, he started working on knowledge creation processes, especially in design disciplines: research by design and research based on and developed through practice and designing. He is the creator and in charge of the Research Training Sessions (RTS) programme of the School of Architecture Sint-Lucas to develop and stimulate ‘research by design’ since 2004. He is actively stimulating and supervising research connected to art, architectural and design practice.

He was co-ordinator of many international projects. He is currently co-coordinating the ITN ADAPT-r (Architecture, Design and Art Practice Training-research) project which develops creative practice research.

Johan Verbeke organised 12 international scientific conferences. He is author of many papers and (co-)editor of 8 books/proceedings in the field of Computer Aided Architectural Design as well as Research by Design. Main area is the application of digital technology during the initial phases of the design process. He is the head of the CAAD Research group of the School.

He is president of eCAADe (Education and research on Computer Aided Architectural Design in Europe), he is active as scientific reviewer for many international conferences. He is (associate-)editor of IJAC (International Journal of Architectural Computing) as well as JAR (Journal for Artistic Research).

Johan Verbeke is also project leader of EAAE (European Association for Architectural Education).
